Response of Dry and Floating Saline Ice to Cyclic Compression

نویسندگان

چکیده

Laboratory experiments on saline ice are often performed cold, isothermal and dry specimens out of convenience versus working with warm or floating in water. The laboratory conditions, thus, usually involve non-natural conditions. This study compares cyclic loading covering the main range ocean wave periods both dry, warm, specimens. Results indicate that −2.5°C have higher moduli than an average temperature a naturally occurring gradient. Moreover, dislocation density estimated using physics-based model strain energy dissipated 10−3–10−2 Hz loading-unloading cycles much lower for Although precise reason difference requires further study, results nonetheless contribute to understanding implementation rheology related geophysical modeling.

Cough response to isocapnic hyperpnoea of dry air and hypertonic saline are interrelated

BACKGROUND Mechanisms behind asthmatic cough are largely unknown. It is known that hyperosmolar challenges provoke cough in asthmatic but not in the healthy subjects. It has been postulated that isocapnic hyperpnea of dry air (IHDA) and hypertonic aerosols act via similar mechanisms in asthma to cause bronchoconstriction. We investigated whether there is an association between cough response in...

Ice in a Floating Ice Tongue

Stable isotope analysis has been used successfully to distinguish between several different ice types in an ice tongue floating on sea water in Antarctica. At one critical location this technique has provided the only means of discriminating unambiguously between glacial ice and fresh-water ice formed from desalinated sea water. This part of the ice tongue is now underlain by a layer of desalte...

Elastic response of floating glacier ice to impact of long‐period ocean waves

[1] Disintegration of ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula over the past two decades has clearly demonstrated their high sensitivity to recent changes in the local thermal regime of the atmosphere and ocean and has given rise to the question of whether mechanical coupling with waves in the ocean may provide the triggering mechanism that starts collapse events. Motivated by these events, th...

Floating Cities on Ice Platform

Many small countries are in real need of additional sovereign territory. Sometimes, they even build on rotting landfills and install various kinds of expensive artificial islands. The ocean covers 71% of our Earth’s surface. Those countries (or persons of wealth) starting the early colonization of the ocean may obtain advantages through additional territory or creating their own independent sta...

Floating Ice-Algal Aggregates below Melting Arctic Sea Ice

During two consecutive cruises to the Eastern Central Arctic in late summer 2012, we observed floating algal aggregates in the melt-water layer below and between melting ice floes of first-year pack ice. The macroscopic (1-15 cm in diameter) aggregates had a mucous consistency and were dominated by typical ice-associated pennate diatoms embedded within the mucous matrix. Aggregates maintained b...
